Wil station (St. Gallen)

Many of the 600 students of the high school in Wil had to cross the busy Hubstrasse to get from the station to the school by bike or on foot. In order to increase the road safety for human-powered mobility, a new pedestrian and cycle lane will be built to link the station with the high school through an access road. The last section of the linkage which runs along the Hubstrasse has been developed into a protected lane with cycle lanes and two central islands.

Three of the existing Bike & Rail facilities were outdated and did not meet the current standard. This is why a new bicycle parking system has been installed, which is simple to operate and better utilises the space.

The first project phase will analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the station’s square including the “Westquartier” as a residential quarter, and also review the situation of the development perimeter from a functional point of view. Based on this first phase, a profile of requirements for the square will be established and solutions will be developed. The second phase sees the development of a gradually implemented concept which will be based on the prior analysis and also take into consideration the project “Slow Motion”.

The project “Slow Motion” won the competition which was launched to restructure the square and the adjacent avenues of the Wil station. According to a city council resolution, the project will be revised in 2013 and implemented in 2015/2016. The implementation complies with a core project of the “Regio Wil” urban planning project. This project gives high priority to the upgrade of public space into urban areas with high quality of movement and convenient changeover facilities. As part of this urban planning project, the Wil regional centre shall be further strengthened, the quality of human-powered mobility shall be improved and the public transport timetable shall be stabilised.
