Commencing at the railway station of Airolo, the Nufenen–Furka–Gotthard Pass Route takes you on a 1-day round-trip over three of Switzerland’s most spectacular Alpine passes.
You have enough time on the Nufenen Pass to be able to truly enjoy the fantastic views (PostBus stop Nufenen Passhöhe). And the impressive Nufenen Pass mountain world entices you to stay a while as well (PosBus stop Nufenen Passhöhe). At a height of stunning 2478 meters above sea level, this is Switzerland’s highest travelled Alpine crossing. Make the most of the 45-minute stop in Gletsch with a bite to eat for lunch and exploration of the area – which has a lot more to offer besides the nostalgic Furka steam train.
The Furka Pass presents even more breathtaking sights, including the Gotthard Massif and the Urserental valley – and from here, the winding pass road leads past the Rhone Glacier and on to charming Valais.
You reach the Gotthard, also known as king of passes, via impressive pass roads with views of the old and historical pass road, which was already one of the most significant North-South connections as far back as the Roman era. (PostBus stop Gotthard Passhöhe). And the Devil’s Bridge, leading over the wild and rugged Schöllenen Gorge is naturally another highlight of this trip…and a valuable, living legend!
